A picture is worth a thousand words, and what better way to capture the precious moments of your newborn baby than with professional photographs? Preparing for a newborn photography session can be a bit daunting for new parents, but with the right tips and guidance, you can make your session a success! Here are my top five tips to help parents prepare for a newborn photography session.

1. Book your photographer early

I highly recommend booking your newborn photography session towards the end of your 2nd trimester or early into your 3rd trimester. Many newborn photographers book up months in advance. Don't miss booking with the photographer you love by waiting too late.

2. Don't stress about baby sleeping

Seriously! It's very common for a little one to want to try and keep an eye out during their session, so don't fret if your little one comes in wide awake. As a trained newborn photographer, we have all sort of soothing techniques, backup plans, and strategies to make sure you end up with a gallery you love.

3. Parents, get in those photos!

I know that with a new little one at home this might mean sleepless nights and extra effort to even get dressed with all the responsibilities your new bundle has given you. But don't worry! I plan my lighting and angles to give you the flattering images that will then be hand edited to make you look like you got that full 8 hours of sleep you wish you had. ;)

4. Plan the Session Time Accordingly

The time that your baby is a newborn is so short and fleeting. The best time to get your little one in for their session is 1-3 weeks old so I like to ask parents to let me know within 48 hours after baby is born so we can set the official date and time for the session. This time frame will give you the best shot at getting all those adorable sleepy poses you love. So quickly they start to grow and become more alert making it tougher to get those images.

5. Relax and enjoy the moment

As a newborn photographer this is probably the most important tip for me. I strive to create a relaxing environment that you can relax and enjoy the show in. Whether baby is wide awake or sleeping like a dream, I am prepared and want parents to know they are in good hands. I want to not only take beautiful photos you can cherish forever, but also create an experience you will remember and look back on fondly.
